Very rare "Lafreri" Map of the African Continent

Based on the important geography of Gastaldi, via the similar map published in the voyages of Ramisio. This extremely rare work was separately published, wide margins being added for inclusion in a made-to-order "Lafreri" atlas, in which form it survived to the present in virtually mint condition.

Norwich appears to have been unaware of the present map. Describing the Ramusio version, he notes that the Nile originates from a two-lake system as in the Ptolemaic tradition, and that information on the map was obtained from the Arab geographers Edrisi and Leo Africanus, and from Portuguese geographers.
