From the first volume of the Civitates Orbis Terrarum. As that work is the first atlas of city-views, and as no full-size, detailed view of Strasbourg appeared previously in a widely disseminated work, this is the earliest such work to be obtainable by most collectors.

At the time the view was composed, Strasbourg was known as a center of humanist scholarship and early book printing. Its academic and political influence furthered the establishment of Protestantism in southwest Germany.
