Miniature Map of Tartary, Japan, and the Northwest Coast of America, after Ortelius
Pietro Marchetti, 1598 (Loviso, 1697) :
Tartariae sive Magni Chami Regni Tipus. 3 x 4 inches. Excellent. $65.
Close-up look at Japan, Tartary, and the west coast of America. The Sierra nevada denotes the coast of what is now California, and three cities are shown in the Southwest. Japan appears with an inscription about Marco Polo. Directly above lies the Strait of Anian, the hypothetical strait of Gastaldi. This copperplate far outlasted its relevance, and at 1697 is an interesting example of map publishing practice of the time.
