Enlarged copy of the landmark Gastaldi map of Southeast Asia

Girolami Ruscelli, 1561 (1574)
India Tercera Nuova Tavola. Excellent. $1100.

Although Gastaldi's 1548 map of Southeast Asia was published in only one edition, Girolamo Ruscelli republished it, about twice the size. Girolamo Ruscelli (ca. 1504-1566) continued the fine engraving quality of Gastaldi, and according to Thomassy (Les Papes geographes in Nouv. Ann. de Voyages, 33, 1853, p.155) his maps served for the models for the wall-paintings done in the Vatican during the reign of Pope Pius IV.
