America West & Northwest

Cornelis Wytfliet, 1597 (1605) :
Limes Occidentalis Quivira et Anian. 1597 (1605). 9.5 x 12 inches. Fine condition save for chip replaced in upper centerfold, just nicking engraved area (visible on illustration). Full original margins. State 2. $1800.

The second printed map devoted to the western part of North America, preceded only by the rare de Jode map of 1593. The map is comprised of nomenclature borrowed from both Plancius and Ortelius, and land is divided into the kingdoms of Tolm, Quivera, Bergi, and, principally, Anian. Wytfliet’s map covers a somewhat wider breadth of longitude and contains some additional place-names, as compared to the de Jode work.
